This past weekend marked the first SAT administration of the 2008-9 school year. As you may also know, may seniors see the October SAT as their chance to shine after a summer’s worth of test preparation. And yet, while so many students do deliver on the October test, there is always word of someone somewhere who completely panicked. One of the elements I work so hard to bring to my own tutoring sessions with students is a sense of focused relaxation: yes, we’re there to learn, no, we’re not there to talk the finer points of fashion trends and the bid for the baseball pennant. However, as a coach, I know from experience that students learn and perform better when they’re completely relaxed.
This Times article offers some interesting ideas on finding relaxation during competition. Consider yourself an athlete when you take the SAT and look for ways to challenge yourself to relax and develop a pace that you can rely on come test day.
